(Chris Ranken, left, and Frank Winston, right, listen raptly to Congressman Lantos.)
Congressman Tom Lantos, speaking to Pacifica Democrats at their monthly breakfast meeting at Sharp Park Golf Course Restaurant on November 17, called the Bush Administration and its policies "obscene," "dysfunctional," and "idiotic."
Lantos also talked about the environmental crisis caused by India and China trying to bring their 2.4 billion citizens up to modern standards of living "in a wink." Lantos said the 2008 Olympic athletes could "choke" on Beijing's infamous smog unless Chinese officials can be persuaded to shut down industrial pollution sources during the games. To give his listeners an idea of the magnitude of China's enormous size and rapid growth, he told how the Chinese plan to build 150 airports the size of SFO over the next decade.
Lantos has spearheaded Congressional legislation to win international agreements on a civilian nuclear fuel bank, hoping this will help to defuse any possible U.S.-Iran conflict.
