The vast expanse of debris - in effect the world's largest rubbish dump - is held in place by swirling underwater currents. This drifting "soup" stretches from about 500 nautical miles off the Californian coast, across the northern Pacific, past Hawaii and almost as far as Japan.

What can Pacificans do about this? We can recycle, reuse, and compost! Avoid materials that are not recyclable, and avoid plastics.
