Well, My Merry Marketeers:
You've done it again. You've made yet another season for the Coastside Farmers Markets a rip-roaring success and I cannot thank you enough! Especially all you Market Faithful who braved the elements last week and despite record-breaking weather events, came on out in outfits that can only be described as spectacular to support your local farmers market. There you were, behaving like so many postal carriers—what with that rain or snow or dark of night attitude going—enduring the subzero temperatures on Wednesday, and the lashing rains on Saturday to fend for your families! I salute y'all, and thank you from the bottom of my bushel! And so do the farmers who made the trek through the same messy weather!
Endings and beginnings abound. I am going to miss seeing y'all, but feel pretty confident that we'll be back in the saddle come springtime, in the same place and timeframe, the difference being your kids a little taller, or in some cases born by then. I can't tell you what a perfect wonder it is to watch from the wings as families form and babies are born and turn into little people right before my eyes each year. I feel a little bit like Miss MaryAnn right now. I see Delphina & Lorenzo, Sianna, Jack, Olivia & Owen, Josephine, Stella, Lola, Zora, Ben, Jake, Bella, Miles & Coral—all of them but glimmers in eyes and bulges in their mothers' waistlines when they first started coming to the Market. I tell you there is nothing much more satisfying than watching a kid just plunk right down in front of the band on the asphalt to eat raw peas and rock out. Gets me every time. I am looking forward to seeing them all in the spring, and their moms & dads & their grandparents too.
It makes my heart a little heavy to know that the last time Vic Tigerman came to the Market early and gave me a big hug and a squeeze first thing in the morning was the last time I'll have that pleasure. I got pretty spoiled by that particular wakeup call over the years. Vic taught me how to hug, in case you were wondering, how to hug back, anyway! And dang, could that man dance. If you never met him, you missed meeting a mighty monument to possibility. If you did know Vic, why then, you know what I am talking about. You just have to sit down to a big bowl of comfort food —he was a fan of food therapy—and thank your stars and all that guides you that you were lucky enough to know someone who was so easy to love, respect, and admire, who made you laugh so deeply and well, helped you to see as deep blessings the simplest of gifts: a sunny sky, a hawk on the wing, a bowl of guacamole, and the time to enjoy it with a friend. Dang.
Local avocados are a little hard to come by this time of year, but thinking about guacamole and this sunny sunny day got me in a south of the border kinda mood, so this afternoon I made myself the yummiest slaw of crisp sweet cabbage with the juice of one of Santiago's tangerines, a dash of Steven's madras curry spices and a soupcon of Big Paw rice vinegar. Not exactly guacamole, but transporting nonetheless and just as good on a fish taco. Apparently I am already thinking ahead to Cinco de Mayo, which is Opening Day in Pacifica in 2010.
I am also thinking ahead to a few key meals and wingdings and getting geared up to stock in some Harley Farms Cheeses and one of James' baguettes, some goodies from Big Paw and Gaia, a Beastie or two in case I forgot a gift for an errant relation, and piles of the Ciponerri Family's truly beautiful dried fruit boxes or some amazing almonds, a pretty bowl from Catherine or Denis to wrap them in, or a sparkly bauble from Avelon or Nilu to round out my shopping, which will include the fixings for an entire mezza platter from Gilbert and Mo, and a couple of Ema's tamales for good measure to round out the fridge with Farmer John and Eda's spinach, the Guisti's peas, Airelle's garlics and famous apple butter, Joon & Ophellia's miraculous mushrooms, Santiago's pomegranates, persimmons and songs, Ben's eggs,Maria and Florentine's preposterously beautiful purple cauliflowers and red carrots, a gallon of fresh pressed cider from West and a box of chocolates from Thalia.
Thank you once again to Franco & Connie Carrubba for donating the ideal space for the Half Moon Bay Market, and to Suzan Getchell-Wallace and everyone at Fahy Properties in Pacifica for being such great neighbors all season. Also, a BIG shout-out to MaryEllen, Wayne,Glenda, Michael and the rest of the Pacifica Relay for Life team for your unparalleled help with the Pacifica Market, and to Colleen Granahan and Kati Mc Hugh for being such outstanding support structures for the 2nd year running.
Thank you to everyone who joined in the inaugural year of the Friends of the Farmers' Markets, and to all of our sponsors, especially the folks at Damasco & Associates, Sam's Chowder House, 1st National Bank, Personal FX, Sierra West Builders and Studio 4 Pilates and Toque Blanche—all of whom have re-upped for the 2010 season already, giving me great confidence to get going and plan for next season, which opens May 1 in Half Moon Bay, followed by the aforementioned Cinco de Mayo extravaganza in Pacifica if all goes well and the tide don't rise. It takes a fair bit of planning and lots of support to do all this, so if you are curious about the Friends of the Farmer's Market, or have a local business and would like to discuss sponsorship options, why do let me know! Thank you once again for a great season! I am so looking forward to next year, but mostly to getting through the holidays without going into tamale withdrawl. Happy Hollandaise!
