Jerry Hill Selects Josephina Enriquez, MD as Woman of the Year
Award honors Half Moon Bay doctor as an exemplary Californian
Sacramento – In a ceremony on March 8 at the State Capitol, Assemblymember Jerry Hill (D-San Mateo) honored Josephina Enriquez, MD as the 19th Assembly District’s Woman of the Year. (Assembly Speaker John Perez, above left, joined Hill in presenting the award to Dr. Enriquez.) All 80 Assemblymembers and their honorees participate in this annual program, which recognizes exemplary California women from across the state. “Dr. Enriquez is an inspirational leader with a long history of accomplishments,” said Assemblymember Hill. “I am pleased to pay tribute to such a talented and dedicated constituent.” Dr. Enriquez, or “Dr. Joy” as she is known, is the longest-serving private physician on the San Mateo County coast. She serves a staggering annual case load of 5,000 patients – 85 percent of them uninsured or dependent on low-income state or county care – while still finding time to run a free RotaCare clinic on the side. Her next ambitious projects include fundraising and recruiting doctors to keep the RotaClinic open every day, as opposed to one day a week, and building a shelter for local homeless veterans and people who have been evicted from their homes. A pioneer, Dr. Enriquez was the first woman member of the Half Moon Bay Rotary Club and she was inducted into the San Mateo County Woman’s Hall of Fame.“Dr. Enriquez has that rare combination of compassion and competence that makes her an extraordinary doctor and role model,” Assemblymember Hill said. “She gives selflessly to her patients and her entire community. Dr. Enriquez has truly made a difference in our lives.” The ceremony for Woman of the Year is the centerpiece of a day-long celebration that includes a morning reception and luncheon with all the legislators and each of their ‘Woman of the Year’ designees. The honored women also meet the state’s First Lady. The day’s events are coordinated by the Legislative Women’s Caucus. Neither state nor legislative funds are used to pay for the activities celebrating Assemblymember Hill’s Woman of the Year.
