When I saw the film of this event as a junior high school student, I was outraged by scenes of police dragging clean-cut college kids out of San Francisco City Hall and downstairs, the demonstrators' heads and limbs thumping on the hard marble steps. It was a seminal moment for me and a lot of other young people in this country, who were galvanized by this brutality into joining the growing nationwide unrest and the movements for civil rights, nonviolence, peace, environmentalism, and feminism.
