Karen is right about the scenery up there, but think how much better it will be when the new Devil's Slide county park opens on the old roadway, allowing pedestrians and bicyclists to enjoy the natural sights and sounds without traffic roaring by, just crashing waves, wind, and seabirds.

I just came back from Half Moon Bay and the traffic both directions was already bad despite it being only 3:30 p.m. on a Friday. I think the tourists are coming to do one last drive over the old road and its wonderful views. I will miss them.

Peter,
Caltrans has long described the tunnels as a "bypass." Can't give up the semantics, I suppose, and call it what it really is: an underground freeway.

The headline says "Devil's Slide Bypass Readies for Debut" and the photo caption says ""They are putting the finishing touches on the Devil's Slide Highway 1 bypass." This comes as a surprise to all those people who thought Caltrans was building tunnels instead of the bypass.
