The Boys & Girls Clubs of North San Mateo County hosted a spaghetti feed fundraiser at the Pacifica Moose Lodge on March 2. Pacifica City Council members Mike O’Neill (also a Boys & Girls Club board member), Sue Digre, Karen Ervin, and Mary Ann Nihart, and Pacifica School District board members Matthew Levie and Eric Ruchames, donned aprons and served dinner to nearly 150 guests.
“We really appreciated the support and presence of Superintendent Wendy Tukloff, Associate Superintendent Tina Van Raaphorst, and several teachers and staff from the district. The Moose Lodge was a very generous host, and the food was fantastic,” says Sharon Dolan, the agency’s executive director.
In addition to the event’s celebrity servers, 15 members of the Key Clubs from El Camino High School and South San Francisco High School volunteered for the event with their organizer Jack Helfrich, a Boys & Girls Club board member.
The event raised nearly $2,000 for children and youth programs in Pacifica. The Boys & Girls Clubs of North San Mateo County serve more than 2,500 children and youth each year at five sites in Pacifica and South San Francisco. The clubs' vision is that every child learn to read by third grade, every child is physically active every day, and every child has a positive sense of self.
In Pacifica, more than 200 registered members attend the club building on Yosemite Drive daily after school until 6 p.m. Club fees are a modest $50-$100 monthly, with scholarships available. Children who receive free or reduced lunch at school may attend for a $30 annual membership fee. The club provides help with homework, sports and arts programs, and summer camp, and soon will host a new technology center.
At Ingrid B. Lacy Middle School, more than 300 students participate in 10 different after-school sports, receive homework support, and drop-in at the clubhouse on campus, where they can receive free healthy snacks daily. Fees charged at both sites cover only a small portion of the costs, and the club must raise the funds to cover the rest.
