With little political power due to its origins in lightly populated southern Humboldt County, EPIC has been educating and rallying people to its issues for a number of decades and protecting the northwest corner of the state by winning 80 percent of its lawsuits when its objections to illegal timber harvest plans and other environmental degradations like highways that trash natural features of the area are ignored. Wish we had a few ongoing groups with clarity of purpose, integrity, and the dedicated expertise of EPIC around here.

Another neat little environmental group in southern Humboldt is Sanctuary Forest. Though it covers a much smaller geographic area than EPIC, it is doing a great job of bringing many different kinds of economic and social interests together to try to give the Mattole River watershed and all within it a future.
