A situation artificially created by stupidly making a widened area for roadside parking across the highway from overcrowded Sam's. There were many objections and comments centering on safety and traffic problems at the time a few years ago. Easily corrected in the Sam's stretch by enforced "No Parking At Any Time" on the shoulders on either side, including the widened area.

Sam's customers park on both sides of Highway 1, so there is always lots of foot traffic across the highway, especially dangerous at night.

The one-mile stretch of Highway 1 between Capistrano Avenue and Coronado Street, which includes Sam's Chowder House, is one of the few segments of Highway 1 where the California jaywalking law applies -- because they are two adjacent intersections both controlled by a traffic light. If an intersection without a traffic light existed between them, the jaywalking law would not apply anywhere along that one-mile stretch.
