Cities of Light: The Rise and Fall of Islamic Spain

Ppbs34018877dt
Get your hands on “Cities of Light: The Rise and Fall of Islamic Spain” on DVD or on demand from your digital television menu. This beautiful PBS documentary tells the history of Islam, Judaism, and Christianity as the three Abrahamic religions and cultures collided and coexisted at different times in Spain, creating some of the world’s finest art and architecture, but also some of the world’s worst examples of cruelty and oppression.

Pacifica Artists at SFMOMA Rental Gallery

The list I handed you [see below] is from the SFMOMA Rental Gallery. It is all the Pacificans represented there right now. I thought that rather than reporting that I got stuff accepted or just mentioning those of us who just now got accepted, it might be well to simply point out that lots of Pacificans make lots of Art and that we are represented there. We are an arty little burg and all the kids should grow up with that in mind. I spoze we are a sporty and sciencey little burg as well.

Michael Slaughter Landscape/Travel Photos

Vietnamflower

Look for a new exhibit soon of the striking landscape and travel photographs of Michael Slaughter. Slaughter's father was an artist, and the photos are done the way a painter might approach the subjects. And like a painting, it's stuff to live with. Stay tuned to Riptide for future shows of Michael's photography.

Ross Fotheringham: Photographer Who Captured the Images of Ferry Boats Battling 50 MPH Winds on Puget Sound

On October 25, Pacifica Riptide posted some amazing photos of Washington state ferry boats rocking and rolling in an October 18 windstorm on Puget Sound. Riptide reader Alan Nicholson, formerly of Pacifica, had forwarded the ferry photos without knowing who had taken them. Today we heard from the photographer who took those pictures, Ross Fotheringham. We invite you to visit his photo gallery to see more great shots of boats, trains, planes, and other moving subjects: ROSS FOTHERINGHAM PHOTOGRAPHY.

Robert Genn's Advice for Artists (Could Apply to You, Too)

Img_0166

Find a sanctuary where you can comfortably work.
Dedicate at least two hours a day to your art.
Have more than enough equipment and supplies.
Set short- and long-term goals and keep track of progress.
Think of your work as exercise, not championship play.
Explore series development and exhaust personal themes.
Work alone with the benefit of books and perhaps tapes.
Replace passive consumption with creative production.
Use your own intuition and master your technology.
Feel the joy of personal, self-generated sweat.
Fall in love with your own working processes.
Be forever on the lookout for the advent of style.
Try to be your own person and claim your rights.
Don't bother setting yourself up for rejection.
Don't swing too wildly and damage the well-being of others.
Don't jump into the ring until you're feeling fit.

Thousand-Hand Dance Video

Pretty_china_12

Take the time to watch this beautiful dance called the Thousand-Hand Guanyin. Considering the tight coordination required, the accomplishment of these 21 dancers is nothing short of amazing, even if they were not all deaf. Relying only on signals from trainers at the four corners of the stage, these extraordinary dancers deliver a visual spectacle that is at once intricate and stirring. Its first major international debut was in Athens at the closing ceremonies for the 2004 Paralympics. But it had long been in the repertoire of the Chinese Disabled People's Performing Art Troupe and had traveled to more than 40 countries. Its lead dancer is 29-year-old Tai Lihua, who has a BA from the Hubei Fine Arts Institute. The video was recorded in Beijing during the Spring Festival celebrations. See the video

American Abu Gothic

Blinded_american_gothic_2

Just thought I'd let you know that last week's San Francisco Bay Guardian published a black-and-white picture of one my oil  paintings. I submitted it for their page 7 political submissions section. It's a dark revision of Grant Wood's  painting, American Gothic. The title is "When America Condones Torture, Our Future Looks Like This."
