Dave, last year there were a few stories in the news about how the apartment owners tried to put riprap on the cliff below the apartments, but our clueless city (and Coastal Commission) once against displayed its hostility toward business owners and delayed giving permission for over a year.
One of the issues I remember getting very steamed about was the way City Engineer Van Ocampo tried to extort (please don't change the word, John) money from the apartment owners to repair the city-owned stairs that led to the beach north of the apartments. That's like paramedics responding to a heart attack victim, and asking the victim for a donation for a new fire truck before they begin treatment.

What baffles me is why the complex owners didn't shore up the cliff prior to spending the bucks to rehab the complex. They must have great insurance.

Evacuation under way at 330 Esplanade as of 07:30 a.m. on December 17. Police on scene. High surf advisory coincides with high tide, adding to concerns.
