Due to a massive upwelling of krill, an unprecedented number of blue whales are gathering in Monterey Bay to feed. Blue whales, the largest animals ever to live on earth, dine exclusively on krill, tiny crustaceans from the deep. They can communicate for hundreds of miles with their subsonic vocalizations, and the word has apparently gotten out that Monterey is the place to be! On a recent whale-watching excursion, our boat spotted more than 30 blue whales, nearly 20 humpback whales, and a pod of Risso's dolphins. The upwelling is expected to last for another two weeks, so if you've been waiting for just the right time to go whale watching, this is it!

Ocean warming is expected to increase the number of zooplankton, including krill. This is expected to have devasting effects on the ocean food chain, decreasing life in the ocean overall.

Perhaps all life on earth is supported by the large mass of bacteria in the ocean. Let's keep the balance, and do what we can to stop global warming. Before it is too late.
