On a related note, I've often wondered if it would be possible to travel from Pacifica to Los Angeles entirely by LOCAL buses -- and how long it would take and how much it would cost. To begin, for $4 and three hours' time, SamTrans buses will get you from Pacifica as far south as the Palo Alto Caltrain Station at El Camino and University Avenue -- which is the northern terminus for Santa Clara County Transit Route 22, which continues down El Camino on your 400-mile journey. Any takers?
(Editor's Note: I don't know if local buses would close up all the gaps, but if you ride Greyhound, Mega Bus, Bolt Bus, or Amtrak Thruway buses in combo with Amtrak trains, you might actually enjoy the trip. But personally, I recommend Amtrak's Coast Starlight to LA. Splurge on a roomette for comfort and privacy. It includes lunch and dinner, with halfway decent food, too. I just did this trip using my Amtrak Rewards Mastercard. Ask me for details if you are interested.)
