Whenever I see some place for the first time, I want the location named the "Carl Discovery Site," no matter how many people are there and have seen it before. Everyone else can have their own discovery sites and their own monuments, even if they are the same sites as mine and, maybe, Portola's. And we need to claim these places for our own purposes without regard to others already using them for their purposes.

Carl, the folks from the county, state, Ohlone representatives, etc. have pretty carefully purged "discover" and similar terms from all of our work on the trail. We can only try to educate others to be a bit more sensitive to the reality of the Portola expedition, rather than hundreds of years of European versions of it.

Most of the mentions in the article are the "Portola Discovery Site" and variations. That's hard to change, since it's been in use for a long time, but I hope it will change over time.
