Also, to correct a previous comment here, our fact checker found online that Oddstad was killed by a wrong-way driver on Highway 99 in Fresno, though Chris Hunter's book on famous Pacificans says Oddstad was killed in the East Bay. Fact checking is a tough business.

Andy's sister Elma was the first woman to run for Congress in this county in 1958.

This off-ramp to Palmetto Avenue has always been a problem. It's a menace when coming off the freeway, hoping that cross-traffic doesn't dart out in your right of way. And since it was built, it has been a wrong-way menace as well, killing Andres Oddstad back in the 1960s. He was the man who built much of Linda Mar.

Keeps happening. I checked Google Street View this morning, looking straight up the southbound off-ramps: Manor, Winters, golf course, and Moose Lodge. They're all minimally posted. Just a sign as you turn, nothing further up the off-ramp. Which is pretty bloody stupid. None of us would ever notice a sign as we turn through an intersection, sober in the middle of the day, let alone being half-cut at 3 a.m. You need another sign well up the ramp (turn back!), and maybe another even farther up the freeway. Honestly, if you miss the weakly displayed first sign, you would never know you were driving the wrong way on the freeway. Stupid, and so easily fixed.
