Or the great white shark (GWS) population is increasing faster than non-surfers realize. In Linda Mar last summer, we were seeing an average of one each week, hurrying the lineup to the beach. I even saw one chasing a harbor seal onto the rocks at Boat Docks. These are all the juveniles from Southern California that are moving north as they grow, trying to get closer to the seal populations.
This video was taken just a mile south of the attack, a day or two previously.

Theories abound: The shark may have been attracted to the split-tail surfboard that looks like a harbor seal, or to the electronics of the car key fob in the surfer's wetsuit pocket (see "ampullae of Lorenzini").
