It is my understanding that this party parked in this lot (see photo below), climbed over the fence and down the cliff face at night (Route 1). Realizing their car was being towed, the man returned by Route 1 and the woman accidentally ran off the cliff by Route 2. (Dan Stegink)

I am also seeing severe undercutting of the roadway right where the trail starts and the tunnel entrance begins.

That area is extremely dark at night and those unfamiliar with the area may not be aware how close they are to these near-vertical cliffs unless they are backlit by moonlight or passing vessels.
This time of year, the waves thundering against the rocks is relatively loud in that specific location.

I looked at the news story and Dan's map a few times in disbelief. I'm still trying to get my ahead around the fact that a couple parked their car after 9:00 at night, then climbed over the fence and down the cliff in the dark. They had to be very drunk or drugged or of very limited intelligence, maybe both. We cannot be responsible for protecting people like this from themselves.

Also, copy editor's note: The article says, "She was laying seriously injured about 3/4 of the way down the cliff face." No, she was lying seriously injured. If she was laying, she was either performing a sexual act or laying something down on the cliff. The Grammar Police thank you. Our motto: to serve and correct.

This rescue was listed at being in Pacifica, but it was 600 yards south of the Tom Lantos (Devil's Slide) Tunnels on Highway 1.
