Mountain lion activity is common in the coastal hills of San Mateo County, including unincorporated areas that are rural but populated, like Montara and Moss Beach. I live at the back of Vallemar in Pacifica, and had a close encounter (within 20 feet) with one in my backyard about 10 days ago. You see them on black & white security videos but don't realize just how big they are -- the one I saw was the size of a large tiger that you'd see at the zoo. I still shudder at the thought of it. Be careful out there!
